A typically low-interest State Senate race in Lebanon County has taken over TV, radio and billboards.

The incumbent, Chris Gebhard, is right out of conservative candidate central casting. At 51, he’s a successful businessman, good golfer and even-tempered. He’s represented the state’s 48th Senate district since 2021, and he considers himself one of the most conservative members of the Senate Republicans Caucus.

His opponent, 46-year-old Clovis Crane, could’ve been cast in several roles. He’s an accomplished jockey and rodeo cowboy who boasts about having Smarty Jones’ newborn on his farm. Now, he’s jockeying for Gebhard’s seat.

Crane uses the populist playbook: promising to eliminate property taxes and cut spending.
