The political game being played around repealing the sales taxes on groceries in South Dakota is like a poker game where Gov. Kristi Noem’s bluff has been called. If or when the tax is repealed, the state will need to find tens of millions of dollars per year to replenish that void, no matter who lives in the governor’s residence next year.

Jamie Smith recently stated at a forum in Sioux Falls in response to the proposed elimination of the sales tax on groceries, “… we don’t need to tax things more, we need more things to tax.”

Instead of taking the approach to find solutions to the reality, the Noem campaign twisted Smith’s words to try to score political points.
