Norway’s gambling reform advocates remain hopeful of eventual change despite the centre-left Labour Party securing victory in September’s election, according to the secretary general of the country’s online gambling trade body.
Carl Fredrik Stenstrøm, secretary general of the Norwegian gaming industry association (NBO), said the election result means Norway will maintain its state monopoly system for at least the next two years.
However, he pointed to record parliamentary support for a licensing model as grounds for continued optimism.
The 8 September election saw the Labour Party emerge victorious, leading a coalition of five parties that strongly supports maintaining Norsk Tipping’s gambling monopoly.
The Conservative Party, Progress Party and Liberal Party had all backed a licensing model prior to the election.
