Opponents of a still under-wraps proposal by top GOP lawmakers to sanction up to four new casinos in North Carolina traveled to Raleigh on Tuesday to urge the General Assembly not to move forward with the idea.

A group of local residents from Rockingham and Nash counties, two of the four counties that could host new casinos if the Republican proposal advances this session, spoke out against the plan during a press conference outside the Legislative Building, just hours before the House Republican Caucus planned to meet to discuss the idea.

Elisabeth Corona, a realtor from Rockingham County who has lived there for 29 years, said she moved to the area because it was a place where “we all watch out for each other.”
