Legislation aimed at cracking down on “sweepstakes gambling” advanced in Trenton May 29.
The Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism, & Historic Preservation Committee approved Senate Bill 4282. According to its sponsors, the measure takes direct aim at a growing number of illegal gambling operations that use sweepstakes-style platforms to skirt state laws.
Key details include:
Would establish stronger penalties for unlawful gambling operations, including increased fines and potential criminal charges
Enhances enforcement authority of the Division of Consumer Affairs and the Division of Gaming Enforcement; empowering both agencies to coordinate efforts to investigate and enforce these penalties
Sen. John Burzichelli, D-3rd District, a prime bill sponsor, said the Garden State has a proud tradition of responsible gaming regulation.
