If Raynham Park is allowed to operate gaming machines under state senate economic development legislation, it would be “an existential threat” to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, Tribal Chairman Brian Weeden warned in a letter.
Raynham Park, a former greyhound racetrack located in Raynham, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
At issue is a type of gambling machine called a “historical horse racing terminal,” which uses results from past horse races to generate outcomes to bets. Weeden said that the machines “look like slot machines, sound like slot machines, and are played exactly like slot machines” despite technically being based on historical horse race outcomes.
