A Canadian man was convicted Monday of animal cruelty charges after he stole a flamingo and injured it during a stay at a Las Vegas Strip resort.
Clark County jurors found Mitchell Fairbarn, of Ontario, guilty of one felony charge and one misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals. He could face up to 4½ years behind bars.
District Judge Jacqueline Bluth set Fairbarn’s sentencing hearing for Dec. 1. Assistant District Attorney Alex Chen said Fairbarn will be allowed to remain on house arrest until his sentencing.
Fairbarn declined to comment after exiting the courtroom.
Authorities alleged Fairbarn stole a flamingo named Peachy from the Flamingo resort’s habitat early March 3, took it back to his hotel room and tortured it.
