New research commissioned by Ireland’s gambling regulator provides “one of the most detailed pictures to date” of the behaviour of players, its publishers say.
The study of 1,000 players’ online and in-person gambling behaviour by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) found that one in 10 have more than four accounts – and that one in four are trying to or planning to cut back.
What’s more, the survey found that nearly four in 10 people who open an account to bet on horses or sport move into online casino games and scratchcards.
In their most recent session, 26 per cent said they lost “a lot,” compared with 17 per cent of in-person players.
