While the push to move Rising Star Casino from southern Indiana to New Haven appears dead, lawmakers in Indianapolis might still want to help the underperforming resort find a new place to thrive.
State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) authored a bill Tuesday that would commission an independent study to find the best places to relocate.
Based on numerous conversations with lawmakers and casino executives, the push to relocate to northeast Indiana might face a pair of hurdles.
First, the gaming compact between Indiana and the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Tribe. The state is given a portion of the revenue from the Four Winds Casino in South Bend in exchange for an “exclusivity area.”
That means the state will not add a casino in Elkhart, Fulton, Jasper, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Lake, LaPorte, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Porter, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, Wabash or Whitley counties.
