The Fremont Plan Commission Tuesday night implemented a temporary moratorium on the development of casinos, gaming facilities, data centers, and battery storage operations on the recommendation of council Kurt Bachman

The decision pauses plans from local developers, such as a recently pitched lakeside resort just across the state line from Branch County, while local officials continue to evaluate infrastructure and zoning needs.

Commission members emphasized that the freeze is designed to ensure the correct regulations, environmental protections, and traffic management standards are formally established before allowing the highly impactful commercial entities to move forward.

The regulatory pause comes amid heightened scrutiny in Steuben County ahead of a referendum this November, when voters will decide whether to approve casino gambling.
