Former Unite Here union President Bob McDevitt plans to challenge Democratic Mayor Marty Small Sr. in the June primary, McDevitt’s campaign said Sunday.

Small administration critics John Devlin, a retired police officer and former school board and municipal utility board member, will run for an at-large City Council seat on McDevitt’s ticket, as will community activist Steve Young and community leader Mohammed Akbar Hussain, according to the campaign. The team will focus on safe, clean streets, it said in a Sunday news release.

Small declined comment Tuesday on the primary challenge.

In May 2023, McDevitt, then 60, resigned as longtime Unite Here Local 54 president to become chairman of the Unite Here national pension fund.
