While the closure of casino operations at Ruidoso Downs initially appeared likely to deal a significant blow to New Mexico’s purse fund, state racing officials say the financial impact should be far less severe because the New Mexico Gaming Control Board allowed Ruidoso’s gaming license to remain in place despite the casino’s closure.
The board’s action came after the New Mexico Department of Transportation recommended closing the casino because flood damage had compromised the property’s main entrance, creating safety concerns for patrons and employees. The closure followed two years of devastating wildfires and flooding that had already forced Ruidoso to relocate its entire 2026 race meet to Albuquerque.
