People contacting GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline are increasingly describing harm outside traditional gambling boundaries, according to new analysis.
The leading UK harms charity said the gamification of everyday life, with design features like near misses, streaks, leaderboards and artificial scarcity working across gaming, retail, and financial services, represents one of the three recurring pathways to harm.
The news comes as part of GamCare’s newly released first edition of its quarterly Signals insight series, which analyzed 2,356 anonymized webchat transcripts from 20 days of helpline activity.
While the charity cautioned the analysis is not a measure of prevalence, it said it represents an early signal of how gambling harm might be changing – with the products at-issue remaining distinct from gambling and subject to different legal and regulatory frameworks.
