A proposal in the Connecticut legislature would bar public colleges in the state from partnering with sponsors to solicit students to gamble, in an effort to reign in what some see as excesses of legal sports betting.

Under the bill, which recently advanced out of the legislature’s higher education committee, public universities could still accept sponsorships from betting companies but could not directly market gambling to students.

Rep. Amy Morrin Bello, a Democrat from Wethersfield who introduced the bill, said she does not know of this sort of direct solicitation happening in Connecticut but has read about it going on elsewhere.
