Bensalem mayor: Loss of casino revenue could bring layoffs

September 30, 2016 · 8:00am ET | 5:00am PT

BENSALEM, Pa. (AP) — A suburban Philadelphia mayor says his township could see police layoffs or higher taxes if stops receiving the millions of dollars it gets from Parx Casino.

The state Supreme Court has ruled the municipal portion of tax on slot machines in the suburbs violates the state constitution because it imposes different rates on casinos depending on their size.

It has given lawmakers four months to find a solution.

The Bucks County Courier Times reports (http://bit.ly/2cPKRPu) Bensalem Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo said Thursday that such a revenue loss would be “absolutely devastating.”

Over the past five years, Bucks County and Bensalem have received nearly $90 million in slot machine revenue from Parx.

State Sen. Tommy Tomlinson, R-6, says perhaps casinos might be able to contribute to communities using a flat fee.
