TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian has canceled his planned appearance in front of a legislative committee.
Assemblyman Ralph Caputo said Thursday that Guardian told him he wasn’t able to attend Thursday’s hearing.
Chris Filiciello, Guardian’s chief of staff, says that he had a personal family issue.
Caputo says he wants to reschedule the appearance.
Caputo is chairman of the Assembly’s committee on gaming and the arts.
Senate President Steve Sweeney and state Sen. James Whalen introduced legislation aimed at helping stabilize casinos’ tax burden. It includes a payment in lieu of taxes program that brings in $150 million from casinos over two years.
Casinos paid $210 million this year in property taxes, though the total amount collected won’t be known until as soon as next week.
