Southland Casino Hotel Monday announced a $1.7 million gift to the Carolyn & Ness Sechrest Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. The new animal shelter will be funded by Southland in a collaboration with its parent company, Delaware North, and the Arkansas Greyhound Kennel Association.

A groundbreaking ceremony, scheduled for Jan. 23, will be held at 10 a.m. CST on the site of the former Mid-South Greyhound Adoption Center. The new facility will be named Carolyn & Ness Sechrest Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Southland. Ness Sechrest is chairman emeritus of Southland’s board of directors.

Southland also is establishing scholarships through a $537,000 gift in a collaboration with Arkansas State University Mid-South. The operator is endowing four scholarships in honor of Crittenden County leaders Mary Toney, the late Cortez Kennedy, the late Frank Martin, and Hershel Owens.
