Gateway casinos across Ontario will remain closed “for the coming days” due to what the company is calling a “cyber-security incident.”

The problem began Sunday afternoon around 1 p.m. Eastern Time and impacted all 14 of Gateway’s Ontario locations. The company issued a notice on its website telling people that all Gateway sites would be closed until further notice, asking people to follow them on Facebook for updates.

Then Monday afternoon, the company issued a news release saying they’re working to restore their IT systems.

“Over the weekend, we detected a cyber-security incident and closed our operations in Ontario. We have retained third-party cyber professionals who are working 24/7 to help us restore the IT environment.

“Our upmost concern is the protection of personal data and information. At this point, we do not have any information indicating that this incident involves any compromise of personal data. However, we are in the process of notifying the relevant privacy officials and gaming regulator of the incident.

“We appreciate the continued patience of our employees, customers and government partners as we work to reopen our properties in Ontario, and will continue to provide further updates to the public regarding our reopening.”

Gateway Casinos & Entertainment is one of the largest gaming and entertainment companies in Canada, with 28 gaming properties in B.C. and Ontario and two properties in Edmonton, Alberta. The company employs around 7,000 people and has 339 table games (including 30 poker tables), 14,031 slots, 94 food and beverage outlets, and 561 hotel rooms.

Ontario casinos affected are Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, North Bay, Wasaga Beach, Innisfil, Casino Rama near Orillia, Clinton, Chatham, Hanover, Point Edward, Sarnia, Woodstock, and London.
