MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Wisconsin’s lottery sales and operating expenses have both increased over the past year, leading to a slight reduction in the amount of property tax relief for Wisconsin residents this year.
According to a Legislative Audit Bureau report, the sales of instant and lotto tickets increased about 1 percent from $568.8 million in the 2013-2014 fiscal year to $574.5 million the next year. Operating expenses meanwhile increased by about 1.6 percent, from $408.7 million to $415.4 million. Prizes, which make up the largest portion of operating expenses, totaled $342.4 million.
The net proceeds from the lottery are used exclusively for property tax relief for Wisconsin residents and translated to $161.4 million in property tax relief for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. That’s down slightly from the previous year’s total of $166.4 million.
