While Chinese officials were proud to announce that over 14 million passengers and over 1.5 million vehicles had crossed the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB), bridge utilization numbers are still far below what a feasibility report in 2008 determined to be a “very conservative assumption” of the bridge’s traffic.

In the first year of the projected 2016 opening of the bridge, the report determined that an acceptable traffic range for the bridge would be on the low end, 9,000/day and on the high end 14,000/day. Four years after opening, that number is expected to jump to 15,320/day at the low end and 22,300/day at the high end.

According to Xinhuanet, about 4,000 vehicles cross the HZMB daily.
