MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (AP) — The tribe that owns the Foxwoods Resort Casino is adding affordable housing for its members to its reservation in southeast Connecticut.

The Day of New London reports (http://bit.ly/1NVCRGP ) the Mashantucket Pequot tribe began construction on the project last month.

About a third of the tribe’s more than 1,000 members live on the reservation.

The tribe has terminated the distribution of casino profits among members as Foxwoods has struggled to reverse a financial slump.

The tribe is financing the project through the sale of off-reservation properties. Officials plan to use the funds from selling the units to build more.

Each of the units consists of three bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, laundry room, 1 ½ bathrooms and a one-car garage. They will sell for less than $200,000.
