An overview of igaming revenue in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, the three states where igaming has launched in the U.S.
Pennsylvania
With brick-and-mortar casinos shuttered the entire month of May, online gaming continued on its upward trajectory for the third month in a row. Pennsylvania’s igaming revenues jumped to $55.8 million in May, a 30% increase over April, itself a 73% increase over March. In March, April, and May of this year, revenue from Pennsylvania’s online slots, table games and poker has increased 128%. In addition, May’s igaming revenue more than doubled March’s (at $24.9 million).
The largest increase was with online slot machines; slot revenue was $38.8 million, a 30% increase month over month for Pennsylvania’s nine casinos that offer igaming.
Slot revenue at Rivers Casino in Philadelphia rose to $15.1 million (27%), reflecting the overall increase. Mount Airy, the only casino in the state that sponsors online poker, earned only $4.6 million, a $600,000 decrease over April.
Once again, Rivers Casino was the big winner in the Keystone State’s igaming space; its $17.6 million in revenues added up to 32% of the state’s total online win.
Sports betting ($4.8 million) and fantasy contests ($318,840) accounted for the remainder of Pennsylvania’s gambling revenues.
Tax revenue generated from Internet gaming pay during May was $24 million.
Three out of Pennsylvania’s 12 brick-and-mortar casinos have been given the go-ahead to reopen later this month.
New Jersey
New Jersey’s increase in igaming revenue was even more impressive than Pennsylvania’s. Internet igaming win in May broke the state record for the third month in a row at $85.9 million, up 7% over April’s $79.9 million and accounting for just over 90% of the state’s total revenues from gambling. Similar to Pennsylvania, online poker showed a decline in revenues, from $5.1 million in April to $4.5 million in May (-12%), though April’s online-poker rake was up 209% over March.
The Golden Nugget’s $29.1 million accounted for a little more than a third of the New Jersey igaming total for the month.
For the month of May, New Jersey’s total gaming taxes were $14.2 million.
A date for the reopening of New Jersey’s casinos has yet to be set.
Delaware
The third and by far smallest state with igaming in the U.S. also posted big increases over the previous month. In fact, for the first time, Delaware igaming win surpassed $1 million for the month.
Delaware’s total igaming win for May was $1.1 million, up 33% over April’s $856,000, which had set its own record. May’s win was also a whopping 262% increase year over year.
Video lottery games were again the main source of income, generating $798,817 in May (up 26% from April), followed by online table games at $242,108 (also up 26%) and $93,973 for poker rake and fees (up 10.7%).
Delaware’s three casinos reopened June 1; this month’s igaming revenues are expected to decline.
National
Total igaming revenue for May 2020 in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware added up to $142.8 million, a 9% increase over April’s $130.2 million.
With Delaware’s three casinos reopened for the entire month of June and a handful of Pennsylvania’s casinos opening before the end of the month, May 2020 might go down in history as the record month for igaming revenues.
