CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) – The mayor pro tem of a small South Texas town has pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting an illegal gambling operation.

Leticia Hernandez Garza is the mayor pro tem of Falfurrias (fal-FYER’-ree-yuhs). She pleaded guilty Monday in federal court in Corpus Christi to aiding and abetting an illegal gambling business in Falfurrias from January 2009 through May 2015.

Prosecutors say the business involved several individuals who conducted, financed, managed, supervised, directed and owned all or part of the business, which operated continuously for more than 30 days and brought in gross revenue of more than $2,000 a day.

Garza could be sentenced to up to five years in federal prison and fined up to $250,000 when she’s sentenced Sept. 22. She remains free on bond until then.
