Revenues to the education fund are the total amount of money transferred from the lottery to the state for the state to distribute each year. The percentage of lottery revenues given to the state has decreased since 2006, so the lottery can put more money into prizes that they say will sell more tickets in the long run. Actual dollar amounts that are generated for the state from the lottery have increased each year.

Sales per capita measures how much was spent per person in a county. It doesn’t take into consideration people who may not reside in the county but just purchased tickets there while visiting or passing through. Lottery officials say drive-through purchases are common, especially in counties that lie along major interstates or highways. Per capita figures were calculated by The Associated Press by dividing 2013 county net sales with the population of the county according to U.S. Census data estimates for that year.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES
Counties receive money for classroom teachers and capital projects based on how many pupils are in their districts. Money for pre-K varies county to county depending on how much it wants to spend and whether it has a pre-K program.
The money that is made from lottery sales is collected at the state level and typically distributed to several education funds in North Carolina. The funds change in each state budget, and have grown over the years to include digital learning and UNC need-based aid. The amount that goes toward the four original funds: school construction, classroom teacher positions and a pre-K program have shifted depending on the budget needs of the year.
The lottery also pays $1 million annually for a gambling addiction, treatment and education programs, including a 24/7 addiction hotline. According to state figures, the numbers of problem gambling cases have not increased as lottery sales have climbed.
