Online casino remains the big storyline in Ontario, according to the third-quarter fiscal-year 2023-24 market-performance report released by iGaming Ontario Wednesday, covering the period Oct. 1 – Dec. 31, 2023.
Wagers in the province totaled CA$17.2 billion (US$12.7 billion), a 21 percent increase over Q2 (excluding promotional wagers). Total gaming revenue was CA$658 million (US$488 million), a 22 percent increase over Q2.
Casino games — slots, live and computer-based table games, and peer-to-peer bingo — generated nearly $13.7 billion (79 percent) of total wagers, and $471 million (71 percent) of gaming revenue.
Betting (sports, esports, proposition, and novelty bets) generated nearly $3.1 billion (18 percent) of total wagers and $171 million (25 percent) of gaming revenue.
Peer-to-peer poker accounted for $431 million (2.5 percent) of total wagers and $17 million (2.5 percent) of gaming revenue.
Currently, 49 licensed operators are doing business in Ontario, with 72 gaming websites up and running. In Q2, that number was 47 operators and 71 gaming websites. In Q1, that number was 46 and 71, respectively.
There are 1.2 million active player accounts in Ontario, up from 943,000 in Q2 (920,000 in Q1). The average monthly spend per active player account in Q3 was $186, down from $191 in Q2, though up from Q1’s $174.
Active player accounts are accounts with cash and/or promotional wagering activity during the time period in question. It does not represent unique players as people might have accounts with multiple licensed operators.
