MONROE, La. (AP) – Three Ouachita Parish governing bodies are winning praise from the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Louisiana and the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living after passing anti-smoking ordinances in recent weeks.
According to a joint news release from the organizations, the Ouachita Parish Police Jury, the Monroe City Council and the West Monroe Board of Alderman have voted to ban smoking at workplaces including bars and gambling establishments.
The groups say the smoke-free measures were passed by Monroe on Sept. 24, the Ouachita Parish Police Jury on Oct. 7, and in West Monroe on Oct. 8. The laws – aimed at protecting bartenders, gambling facility employees and entertainers – go into effect on Jan. 2.
