Pittsburgh to receive $10M from casino in 2016, 2017 in deal

November 14, 2016 · 5:44pm ET | 2:44pm PT

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh’s mayor says the city will receive $10 million in gambling tax money through this year and at least next year under a deal with Rivers Casino.

Mayor Bill Peduto said Monday the stopgap measure closes a large budget shortfall and will cover more than 200 positions. The Democrat said the city has reduced its workforce by 25 percent in recent years and another such reduction would hinder its ability to serve residents. More details are to be released about the agreement later in the week.

The state Supreme Court ruled in September that the formula that determines how much casinos must pay their host communities was unconstitutional.

General manager Craig Clark said officials worked with city officials on the issue “to reinforce Rivers Casino’s strong commitment to our hometown.”
