Pennsylvania casino revenue declines slightly in May, but igaming advances

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board Thursday reported total gaming revenue of $447.7 million for the month of May 2022. While the total is a year-over-year increase of 8.4% compared to revenue generated in May 2021, it’s a decline in the Commonwealth from both April 2022, when the state reported $461.6 million, and March’s record revenue of $462.7 million.

Hollywood Casino at Penn National in Grantville led all brick-and-mortar casinos in the Keystone State in total revenue, reporting $62.8 million, a slight decrease of 0.2% from May 2021. Parx Casino in Philadelphia generated $57.5 million, a year-over-year decrease of 6.9%. Valley Forge Casino Resort in King of Prussia saw a dramatic drop of 25.1% from the previous year, but still brought in the third highest revenue in the state at $52.8 million.

Statewide, slot revenue for May was $205.6 million, a 2.1% year-over-year increase. Parx Casino generated $34.3 million in slot revenue, a decrease of 9.2% from May 2021 and the second consecutive month the Philadelphia casino has seen a year-over-year decrease in slot revenue. Wind Creek Bethlehem’s $24.9 million and Rivers Casino Pittsburgh’s $22.1 million rounded out the top three slot revenue generators.

Total revenue generated from online casinos was $113.3 million, an increase of 11.9% over May 2021, and a 2.8% increase over April 2022’s $110.2 million. Hollywood Casino at Penn National led igaming revenue with $45.5 million. Rivers Casino Philadelphia generated $26.9 million in igaming revenue, and Valley Forge Casino Resort brought in $21.1 million.

Total handle for sports betting in May was $493.3 million, resulting in revenue of $35.0 million. Valley Forge continued to lead Pennsylvania sports betting with the highest handle, $193 million, and revenue, $19.8 million. Hollywood Casino at the Meadows reported a handle of $111.5 million and revenue of $7.1 million. The handle at Hollywood Casino Morgantown was $54.1 million, with revenue of slightly more than $837,000.
