A high school culinary program in Nevada is thriving because of an initiative sponsored by Eureka Casino Resort in Mesquite, Nevada.

Since 2016, the Virgin Valley High School culinary program has trained students to be culinarians thanks in part to the ongoing support by the casino resort’s Eureka Community Initiative.

The partnership between Eureka Casino Resort and Virgin Valley High School started when the district funded an instructor but lacked resources for equipment, supplies, or ingredients. The culinary classroom sat unused for years, and there was no operational budget to launch the program.

“When the school approached us about the culinary program, we saw an opportunity that aligned perfectly with our mission,” Eureka Casino Resort CEO Andre Carrier said in a statement. “Mesquite needed skilled workers in hospitality and food service, and our students deserved the chance to build meaningful careers right here at home. At Eureka, we believe in investing in people. And that starts with giving young people the tools to succeed.”

The initiative rehabbed the classroom, supplied all cooking utensils, aprons, and essential equipment, and established a partnership with US Foods to deliver ingredients directly to the school. The initial investment exceeded $100,000, and ECI’s commitment has since continued.

“Our partnership with the school means that when they need something, they ask. If we can do it, we do it,” said Eureka Community Initiative Director Gerri Chasko. “But beyond the dollars, we’re investing in futures. Some of our former culinary students now work in our kitchens, including Gregory’s (the steakhouse at Eureka Casino Resort). Watching them grow from students into professionals is incredibly rewarding.”

The three-year program offers college credit coursework, allowing students to graduate with six college credits and the skills to enter the workforce. Instructor Nycole Nelson leads students through hands-on learning in cooking techniques, food safety, workplace readiness, and professional kitchen operations. The program also emphasizes community engagement, with students catering school fundraisers and community events

“This partnership embodies the Eureka Way, a creative collaboration and a genuine investment in our community’s future,” said Carrier. “These aren’t just students learning to cook. They’re young people discovering their potential, building confidence, and preparing for successful careers. That’s what community partnership is all about.”

The Eureka Community Initiative, formed in 2012, reflects the company’s deep roots in Mesquite. Founded in 1997 and 100% employee-owned since 2015, Eureka Casino Resort has powered more than 50 community programs across education, outreach, economic development, and citizenship.
