The Pechanga Band of Indians has contributed $100,000 to the Monterey Park Lunar New Year Victims Fund.

The GoFundMe account organized by Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California and other groups has a stated fundraising goal of $1 million. At press time, Pechanga’s donation was the largest to be pledged to the fund.

“The city and community of Monterey Park opened its arms to Pechanga more than a decade ago to partake and contribute to the excitement of its Lunar New Year Festival,” the tribe said in a statement. “As we mourn the victims of the recent Lunar New Year Festival shooting, Pechanga’s commitment to the community remains unwavering. A contribution of $100,000 has been made to the victims’ fund in solidarity with their families and community.”

“The Monterey Park community welcomed Pechanga into their festivities many years ago,” said Pechanga Tribal Chairman Mark Macarro. “Pechanga has made great friends and acquaintances through Monterey Park’s Lunar New Year Festival. Like so many throughout California, we are deeply saddened by this tragedy and extend our deepest condolences and support for the victims.”
