The Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians recently announced that its five Kewadin Casinos in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan will now be smoke-free
The policy, adopted by the Sault Tribe Board of Directors September 17, will take effect at the tribe’s casinos November 11 in Sault Ste. Marie, St. Ignace, Manistique, Christmas, and Hessel.
“The Sault Tribe’s decision to transition to smokefree across all Kewadin Casinos underscores a deep commitment to the health and safety of the Upper Peninsula community,” said American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation Tribal Relations Consultant Clinton Isham in a statement. “By joining over 1,000 casinos, including more than 140 Tribal gaming properties, in going smokefree, Kewadin Casinos have set a powerful example for other gaming facilities to follow suit.
“This decision not only aligns with the overwhelming public preference for smokefree environments but also paves the way for a safer, healthier experience that will benefit everyone who visits or works at the Kewadin Casinos. Beyond supporting the needs of its community, the Sault Tribe only stands to gain business by transitioning to smokefree, as guests are more likely to visit Kewadin Casinos now that they can be assured of its safety.”
According to MLive, the casinos will provide a designated outdoor area with seating and convenient access for smokers.
“This policy change aligns with our mission to create the very best experience possible for all our guests,” Kewadin Casinos CEO Allen Kerridge said. “We’ve heard from many customers and team members who feel a smoke-free environment is the right step forward. We’re excited to meet their needs and provide an even more welcoming atmosphere at all our properties.”
