Mass. panel weighs future of Suffolk Downs casino plan

December 10, 2013 · 10:04am ET | 7:04am PT

BOSTON (AP) – State gambling regulators are set to decide whether to allow Mohegan Sun to proceed with a bid to build a resort casino on land owned by Suffolk Downs in Revere.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is expected to take two key votes on Tuesday. A no vote in either case would likely kill the plan.

The five commissioners first must decide whether to allow Mohegan Sun to be the applicant for the lone eastern Massachusetts casino license. The panel also must determine whether Revere residents would be required to vote on the dramatically altered casino plan.

The shift to the Revere-only plan came after an earlier proposal from the Suffolk Downs thoroughbred racetrack to build a casino on the Boston-Revere border was rejected by voters in the East Boston neighborhood.
