EVERETT, Mass. (AP) – Plans to clean up a former Monsanto chemical plant site are in doubt as a $1.7 billion Wynn casino project continues to face legal challenges.

The Las Vegas-based casino giant says it’ll announce Tuesday whether its privately-financed, $30 million environmental remediation can continue as planned.

Wynn Everett president Robert DeSalvio is expected to be joined at the casino site by representatives from the Environmental League of Massachusetts, the Boston Harbor Association and the Mystic River Watershed Association.

Wynn announced a hiring freeze last month and postponed this spring’s expected groundbreaking as the Everett waterfront project, which overlooks Boston, faces a series of legal challenges by the nearby city of Somerville.

Mayor Joseph Curtatone’s latest challenge is an administrative appeal of the state’s decision to award the project a key environmental permit.
