The Indian Gaming Association has announced the IGA Wellness Walk and Run: Honoring Chairman Ernest Stevens Jr. It starts at 7 a.m. March 31 at the San Diego Convention Center grand stairway.

Organized with Veterans in Gaming, this first-year event brings people together in a way that reflects Chairman Stevens and, according to a news release, is “about community, health, and honoring the spirit of service that guided his life.”

A citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, Stevens spent his life standing up for tribal sovereignty and strengthening Indian Country. His leadership was shaped early on by his father, Ernie Stevens Sr., who served in the U.S. Marine Corps. That example of service and discipline stayed with him and became part of how he led.

“Chairman Stevens believed in honoring those who serve because he understood it personally,” Stevens’ successor, IGA Chairman David Z. Bean, said in a statement. “His father’s service meant something to him, and you could see that in the way he carried himself. This walk reflects that. It is about coming together, taking care of ourselves, and remembering the people who came before us. Indian Country has always stepped forward in service, and we continue to do so.”

Stevens had a deep respect for veterans and never missed an opportunity to recognize their contributions. He often spoke about the role Native people have played in defending this country, serving at some of the highest rates of any population in the United States. That pride carried through his work and his relationships across Indian Country.

This year’s walk will feature a blessing led by Dawn Manuelito, a Navajo Nation citizen and founder of Manuelito Health and Wellness Systems. Manuelito will lead participants in honor of her grandfather, Marine Corps PFC James C. Manuelito Sr. As one of the original Navajo Code Talkers, his service played a critical role during World War II and remains a powerful reminder of the contributions Native people have made to this country.

“This walk, for me, is about honoring my grandfather and all Native veterans,” Manuelito said. “Their strength, their sacrifice, and their commitment continue to guide us. It is an honor to bring that forward in a space that brings our people together.”

The opening welcome begins at 7 a.m., followed at 7:05 a.m. by the Honor Walk to Tuna Harbor Park. To Register:  click here
