GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) – A former Greenville County sheriff’ s deputy has been accused of taking bribes from a man who ran an illegal gambling operation.

Prosecutor Walt Wilkins said Friday that Brendan Shea Smith had been charged with one count each of common law and statutory misconduct in office.

Smith was fired from the department in July. Authorities say that, between June 2008 and December 2013, he took bribes in exchange for giving sensitive law enforcement information to Izzat Khalil while Khalil was being investigated for illegal gambling.

His lawyers says Khalil bought a deputy a truck and paid for his children’s school activities in exchange for tips that helped him keep his gambling operation going.

It wasn’t immediately known if Smith had an attorney.
