DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) — The Old West gambling town of Deadwood is undertaking a program to help restore old advertisements on the exterior of historic structures.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission got approval Monday for a program to restore ads known as ghost signs.

Historic Preservation Officer Kevin Kuchenbecker says program guidelines require property owners to submit a proposed budget for the restoration. The program would cover 80 percent of the cost while the owner would pay the remaining 20 percent.

The program will begin by restoring a Champion Spark Plug advertisement, which is at 15 percent of its original quality. The ad is on the side of the Celebrity Hotel. The project is estimated to cost almost $5,200. Work will begin as weather allows.
