ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Gov. Andrew Cuomo says operators for new casinos in upstate New York casino should be selected by early this fall.

In his State of the State address Wednesday, Cuomo set a swift timeline for the process of choosing the sites, starting with a board to be appointed this month. Applications will be accepted in March. Bids will be due by June. A policy book accompanying Cuomo’s speech says construction can begin after the early fall announcements.

New York officials can award up to four casino licenses upstate after voters in November passed a state constitutional amendment to allow Las Vegas-style casinos beyond Indian land.

Cuomo also says he has nominated the president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Mark Gearan, to become chairman of the state’s Gaming Commission.
