Casinos, transportation taxes and more on lawmakers’ agenda

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – New Jersey residents in 2016 might have to weigh in on transportation taxes, public pensions, legislative redistricting and possibly casinos in northern New Jersey.

State lawmakers have packed the agenda for Monday’s final lame-duck session when they’ll consider constitutional amendments on the four issues.

Most debated is a measure to permit northern New Jersey casinos. Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto are pushing competing bills that differ on who could own the new casinos and how much tax revenue would return to Atlantic City.

The Democratic-controlled Legislature agrees on the other issues, including a measure requiring every cent of fuel taxes to be spent on transportation, establishing a new process for drawing legislative districts and mandating the state pay on the public pension quarterly, rather than annually.
