Casino panel to discuss timetable for SE Mass. (AP)

BOSTON (AP) – Companies interested in developing a casino in southeastern Massachusetts may soon have a better idea of when they can enter the bidding.

The state’s gambling commission is slated to discuss and possibly vote Thursday on a timetable for casino applications in the region.

The panel voted last month to open the region to commercial casino developers, ending a period of exclusivity the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe had previously enjoyed under the state’s 2011 casino law.

The panel discussed a plan earlier this month that would allow preliminary applications in October, with a license possibly awarded by the end of 2014. But some commissioners wanted that timetable accelerated so the region does not fall too far behind eastern and western Massachusetts.

Developers would have to ante up $400,000 to enter the competition.
