The sponsor of legislation that could have added Northern Virginia to the state’s casino industry says he “will be back” with it next year after Gov. Abigail Spanberger vetoed his bill April 9.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax County, sounded perturbed with his fellow Democrat over her action and reasoning for it. He said he was “deeply disappointed” over the veto and attempted to discredit Spanberger’s rationale.

Surovell said the casino was “Northern Virginia labor’s number one legislative priority,” but Spanberger noted that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors had gone on record as opposing it. And if the local government does not want it, then the General Assembly’s ability to decide a locality’s eligibility for a casino should not override that.
