Virginia reported its largest month of sports wagering activity thus far in 2023 and the second busiest month ever during September.
The return of the NFL and college football helped generate more than $520.3 million in gross sports wagering, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Virginia Lottery. That represents about $17 million per day and was exceeded only by the $528 million spent in October 2022, lottery figures show.
Over $514.7 million was wagered through mobile operators and $5.6 million was wagered at Virginia’s three casino sportsbook sites in Bristol, Danville and Portsmouth, according to the lottery.
Virginia bettors claimed a total of $466 million in gross winnings during the month, also the highest of 2023 and second highest ever.
