Local lawmakers have not budged on their opposition to the idea of a casino in Roanoke.
Late last year, city leaders proposed building an entertainment district around the Berglund Center. The idea included hotels, parking, restaurants, and a casino.
The city received thousands of dollars and signed a non-disclosure agreement with a casino operator, but the company’s name was never disclosed. The city also hired a lobbying firm, paying it thousands of dollars in an attempt to get lawmakers on board.
In Virginia, state lawmakers and the Governor must approve any casino. The idea did not gain traction and was not mentioned during this year’s General Assembly session.
