Industry sources say Vicky Foxcroft MP is considered a frontrunner for the UK government’s gambling brief, with a final decision due later this week.
The MP for Lewisham North was one of the six named junior ministers tapped for a role at DCMS – sometimes dubbed the “Department of Fun” – in the latest reshuffle, alongside current gambling minister officeholder Baroness Fiona Twycross.
However, the actual portfolio roles for each of the minister of state and parliamentary under-secretary positions have not yet been announced, which NEXT.io understands is a situation common in junior minister roles across the various government departments.
It comes amid a rocky period for the gambling sector, which has seen much of the industry and horse racing sector openly revolt against the Gambling Commission – which itself is being led on an interim basis – and its attempt to implement Financial Risk Assessments.
