The Gambling Commission told NEXT.io it “vigorously” disagrees with claims it failed in its regulatory responsibilities after being sued by reform campaigner Annie Ashton.
Annie Ashton, widow of Luke Ashton, has filed a claim with the UK High Court challenging its decision not to pursue enforcement action against Flutter-owned Betfair after Luke’s death in 2021.
The business was placed under “special measures” between January and June 2021, a regime in which companies can escape formal action in certain circumstances.
In March 2024, the Commission opted not to impose regulatory action, claiming the that concerns resulting from Luke’s case had been addressed during this process.
