America’s “prediction market” betting craze is landing in Britain as a gambling group gears up to launch the first exhange of its kind in the UK.

Matchbook, a popular sports betting group, is expected to roll out the UK’s first prediction market in the coming weeks, allowing Britons to make yes or no bets against each other on sporting and political events.

Prediction markets have boomed in the US with $44bn (£32.8bn) staked by gamblers last year. The sector is dominated by the world’s two largest exchanges, Kalshi and Polymarket, neither of which are available in the UK.

Unlike traditional betting platforms, prediction markets offer peer-to-peer stakes that allow gamblers to bet against each other with the exchange operators taking a small commission fee for each bet.
