Sweden’s Supreme Court has upheld a major ruling against Betsson Group’s Malta-based subsidiary, BML Group Ltd, ordering the company to repay approximately €500,000 [$590,000] to a former Swedish customer who suffered from gambling addiction.
The decision, issued 1 July, confirms a December 2023 judgment by the Patent and Market Court of Appeal.
That court found BML Group had exploited the player’s known gambling problem through aggressive marketing and bonus incentives.
The individual gambled on Betsson’s online casino between 2009 and 2014 — well before Sweden’s new Gambling Act came into effect in 2019. In January 2012, Betsson upgraded the player to VIP status, after which its targeted marketing intensified.
