The Swedish government has announced a review of the country’s Gambling Act to enhance consumer protection and crack down on unlicensed gambling activities. The initiative aims to close regulatory loopholes that allow unlicensed operators to continue targeting Swedish consumers.
A government-appointed investigator will assess potential expansions to the current Gambling Act, particularly focusing on the “directional criterion,” which determines whether an online gambling platform requires a Swedish licence.
The proposed changes could make it easier to block unlicensed gambling companies and enforce stricter regulatory oversight.
Marcus Isgren, chairman and head of the Swedish Board of Consumer Complaints, has been appointed as the lead investigator.
