South Jersey’s tourism industry had some successes amid the economic challenges this summer, a Stockton University panel said Thursday.
At the university’s Jersey Shoreview forum, speakers agreed that efforts to increase the crucial tourism industry met with mixed success over the summer.
“Casino revenue was up,” said Jane Bokunewicz, director of Stockton’s Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism, which studies the Atlantic City gambling and tourism markets. “But hotel taxes were down, and there is still some uncertainty toward the future.”
For instance, Atlantic City’s casinos saw their gross gambling revenue increase by 15.4% in June, July and August to $1.73 billion.
