Rhode Island lawmakers are debating whether to scrap the state’s unique sports betting system and open it up to competition from the national gambling giants that operate in other states.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized sports betting, the Ocean State has only allowed wagers on a single app, the Sportsbook Rhode Island platform run by International Game Technology, the state’s exclusive and homegrown gambling technology provider.

The apps from DraftKings, Fanduel, BetMGM, ESPN Bet and even Providence-based Bally’s can only be used if you cross state lines to Massachusetts. Many gamblers like the bigger national apps and have complained about the quality of the SportsBook RI app.
