Gary has long suffered from disinvestment, especially in its many abandoned, boarded-up houses, but one property owner is betting people will want to stay near the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana.

Port of Harlem magazine publisher Wayne Young, now a Washington, D.C. resident, and his brother Derrick Young renovated their family home and opened it as a short-term rental they’re calling The Young’s — Northern Indiana.

“It’s five minutes from the casino and the convention center if they build it there,” Wayne Young said… “Growing up in Gary, if someone died or moved, the house ended up vacant or was torn down. For the first time, there are now flippers buying houses in Gary.”
